Detox. Such a controversial word. Juice cleansers and supplement poppers claim you need to regularly detox with rigid programs. Doctors will tell you that your body has a very effective detoxification system and cleanses are an unnecessary wallet drain. I suppose I live somewhere in the middle – I fully believe in the body’s ability to detoxify itself, assuming we are not abusing it (read: too few vegetables, too much booze, too little water). Instead of giving you another complex, promise-you-the-world cleanse, I put together a list of simple ways to support your body regularly so you never feel the need for an overhaul.
Help Your Body Detox (Without the Juice Cleanse)
Give your liver some love
Watch your alcohol intake: Moderate drinking is considered 1 drink for ladies and 2 for guys (per day). Just 4 drinks is considered binge drinking for women!!! #whoa
Drink more green tea: sipping green tea throughout the day has been shown to improve blood markers of liver health. It may also reduce oxidative stress and fat deposits in the liver.
Support your skin
Dry brush: dry brushing helps exfoliate the skin, improve circulation, and increase lymph flow/drainage. And if nothing else it leaves you with super smooth skin!
Sweat: this helps detox heavy metals from the body. Saunas or hot yoga are amazing for getting your sweat on (or just a super intense workout will do the trick)!
Pooping: Sorry #TMI but this is crucial! If you struggle here, the number one thing you need to focus on is fiber (think leafy greens, whole grains, and supplements like inulin). Also, hydrate! If these basics don’t work, try magnesium powder which is also great for sleep.
Probiotics: This will also help the above. Taking a probiotic supplement or simply eating foods with healthy bacteria (yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi) is great for gut health, which in turn helps digestion!
Some of it’s in your head
Stress and mental health can have a huge impact on gut and overall digestion. Finding your zen through meditation, yoga, or taking a vacation can all help the body detox.
Catch some zzz’s
Sleep is crucial for cellular repair, hormone production, and detoxification. Try a calming bedtime routine, shutting off your phone an hour before bed, and making your bedroom a clean + relaxing space.
